Cascade des Dioux Hike: A Waterfall in the Chartreuse Massif

If you’re looking for a quiet hike in the Chartreuse Massif, the Cascade des Dioux hike is a perfect choice. With limited time in the region, I opted for this short and scenic walk over a longer trek. Although I often hike solo in the mountains, I always make it a point to share my plans with someone, just in case. Even if it’s just a quick message to a friend or family member, sharing your itinerary (even if it’s just a rough outline). It adds a valuable layer of safety, especially in more remote places like the Chartreuse.

Discovering Waterfalls in the Chartreuse Massif

With its limestone cliffs and relatively humid climate, the Chartreuse Massif is home to impressive waterfalls. This small massif is located between Chambéry and Grenoble. It is often crowded during the summer. The waterfalls in the Cirque de Saint-Même, one of the most spectacular spots in Chartreuse, become very busy, sometimes too busy. As a result, access is now restricted. The Cirque de Saint-Même was, of course, on my list. However, I preferred to wait for a weekday to visit this iconic location to avoid the crowds. On weekends, I chose to look for wilder waterfalls, perfect for a moment of solitude. Among them, I visited the beautiful Cascade des Dioux.

How to Reach the Cascade des Dioux Trailhead

I parked in the village of Les Massards at the Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet ski resort. From there, take the path of Les Massards to the right of the Bruyant stream.

From Les Massards to Sous les Massards

The first part of the trail reaches the area known as “Sous les Massards.” The path is wide, and passes by some houses. I then arrive at a meadow and spot some signs in the distance. There’s no doubt that I’m on the right path. The Dioux waterfall is indicated by a sign, and it’s only 5 minutes away (0.2 km). From there, the route goes into the forest to reach the Waterfall.

At the Foot of Cascade des Dioux

Upon reaching the base of the waterfall, I am greeted by a small amphitheater. It’s possible to swim at the base of the waterfall. Although the pool is not very deep, the refreshing cold water is most welcome! On this day, early in the summer, the flow was quite impressive.

Dioux waterfall

The Bruyant Stream drops about fifteen metres to form the Cascade des Dioux. The Chartreuse Massif is mostly limestone, but the rock here looks more like schist to me as it has that layered appearance. Then again, I’m no geologist, so it’s just a guess! The Dioux Waterfall is about 15 metres high. The layers of rock create little steps, and there’s even a stalagmite that’s formed from the steady flow of water, which is pretty cool to see.
